Vert line and forward arrow thing is misformating my Writer docs

Hi, About 1-2 weeks ago suddenly without me wanting it my cursor developed a shadowing thing I will paste in and at same time I have got extra blank lines inserted and all sorts of misformatting. How can I get rid of this?

It is center top in image, Vert line followed by solid right arrow.

Direct Cursor mode is active. Switch it off.
