What should I do if my WinXP SP3 LO 4.0.1 Calc crases when I try to type a formula.
I cannot open any .ods as well.

Try to reset user profile http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile For me LibO 4.0.1 in Windows XP SP3 works without any problems

I tested 4.0.1 portable and it works fine with XP Prof / SP3

I trust hint of @Timon1 works
