I try to input this simple formula and it works anywhere in the spreadsheet except where I want it and there the system throws up a number: N123, like that immediately after the formula and won’t take it in. Like the formula: =(k121-l12) the system might make it: =(k121-l121)N233 or such.

Do not click anywhere after you typed-in the formula. Just hit Enter key. I suppose it, you clicked on the cell N233 accidentally.

Thank you, sir, that’s all it was. Yep, I was quite deliberately clicking elsewhere as my way of moving away from the whole thing. ah, well, always learn the hard and slow way… 
By the way, you do not need parentheses here, just =K121-L121.
