Why do my ordered lists look worse after adding more points?

I am using LibreOffice (v7.3.7.2) Impress (on Ubuntu). I am a bit at loss and dissatisfied how difficult it is to create reasonable looking ordered lists. I am starting off with a blank document and add an ordered list, which at first looks good:

but after adding more items Impress adaptively changes so all items fit on the slide and the format completely falls apart. I really don’t understand how this is the default behaviour:

What can I do to stop this behaviour ideally as default for all new documents?

Select your list

  1. Click Format > Bullets and Numbering
  2. In the Bullets and Numbering dialogue, set Width to 2.00 cm (or to suit). OK

Do you know how I can make this the default?

Click Apply to Master in the Bullets and Numbering dialogue. Then save as Template I suppose.

I haven’t used ordered lists in Impress and the playing I did today showed me that styles work differently than in Writer. I would want to spend some time with the Impress Guide on the use of Master documents slides, download from English documentation | LibreOffice Documentation - LibreOffice User Guides to find out. Sadly, I don’t have time for that at the moment.
