Why is this UI not accessible to color-blind people?

In this UI (for https://ask.libreoffice.org/ ) the status of the “Solution” checkbox is indicated by color. When the checkbox is checked, a “check” is drawn in the box. When the checkbox is not checked, a “check” is still drawn in the box. This is not how a checkbox works. This is also not how UI accessibility for colorblind people works. How does a system that is so obviously broken, and that is used by so many people, not get fixed on the first day it was implemented like this?

solution

You tagged writer but your link references tha AskLO site. In addition the linked page has no check box. What are you talking about exactly? A problem in Writer when you create a document? Something wrong with the site? (but then on which page?)

Any question not related to the LO suite should be tagged meta. Questions about site ergonomics should go into the Site FeedBack category.

Yes, I could not find a more appropriate tag, and the instructions stated that I must select at least one tag. I edited my question to clarify. I am reference the “solution” checkmark on this present page here. Why is this UI not accessible to color-blind people?

Indeed, highlighting a control in green is problematic for colour-blind people. I hope people from TDF-infrastructure can do something.

I (Firefox on Windows 10) can only see the grayed marked box but without “Solution” when not a solution.

And green (with word) when it’s marked as a solution.

Where is the first screenshot from?

Hi LeroyG, my screenshot is from https://ask.libreoffice.org/t/why-is-this-ui-not-accessible-to-color-blind-people/133697. The top half of my screenshot (with “Solution” rendered in black) is what I see under every post, and the bottom half of my screenshot (with “Solution” rendered in green) is what I see under a post if I toggle the “Solution” status to “true” by clicking on the “Solution” UI button.

In Firefox using Windows 10, my “Solution” buttons are rendered as per my screenshot, so I do not know why there is a difference between how these buttons are rendered in my Firefox browser as compared with your Firefox browser.

I agree. Also, rendering an “unchecked” checkbox with a checkmark in the checkbox is problematic for ALL people. This is just mind boggling. It is really impossible to articulate just how bad this idea is. The fact that this obviously bad idea is out in the open for everyone to see really tends to undermine confidence in this organization. This is analogous to having a fire exit door chained shut, with despite hundreds of people walking past the door every day, no one thinking to complain and/or no complaints resulting in a fix. The culture of the Libre Office organization is clearly very unhealthy.

And not me. My Firefox version is 149.0.
But an empty square, without “Solution” next to it, is not a good option.

Could it be due to an accessibility option on Firefox?

It is not the French interface of this site (https://ask.libreoffice.org/u/[your_user_name_here]/preferences/interface).

It’s difficult to say. You could try a different browser. On my computer I’m seeing the same user interface rendered in both Firefox and Brave (which is Chrome-based). I would guess maybe your Firefox browser (or perhaps your ISP’s cache?) is not displaying the “Solution” text because it is somehow holding onto a cached .css file of a previous version? But that’s just a guess. Here is what it looks like for me now that I have enabled “dark mode”:
