So this .docx file suddenly shows up on screen with all its y’s and z’s missing, and when I attempt to type in a y or a z, nothing happens.
Ah, I’ve found the fault: it’s in the font. Thanks all.

What version of the LibreOffice and Operating System are you using?
… and please provide a sample document showing the artifact.
And what locale setting are you using? (The position z/y keys on my Hungarian keyboard is different (reverse) than on an English keyboard.)
English: QWERTY… / Hungarian: QWERTZ…
Lots of y’s and z’s in that document, displayed by LibreOffice 6.4.6
However, Please do not use the Answer field for comments that are not an answer to the original question, instead edit your original question to provide further details. Thanks. When done please delete this answer.
I can insert z and y characters into your sample file with my permanently installed and the portable LibreOffice versions. And I can see all of previously inserted z and y characters of the document.
But there are missing (substituted) fonts in your documets. I have not
New York Regular
Palatino Regular
Palatino Italic
fonts on my Windows10
