I imported an Excel sheet into a Calc sheet and was surprised to see the formulas transferred just fine. Then I ran it and it ran just fine, so far. Is this normal for Calc to be able to do that?

Most of the formulas works in both spreadsheet applications. But there are some functions, what not exists in the one, and it present in the other application.
There are some differences in the syntax of the formulas (different separator characters, differents passed parameters, etc…)
