In short, I want to split the worksheet so each section of the split is completely independent from the other.

I’ve attached a file as an example. I’d like the shaded columns to be separated from the other columns so that when I scroll up and down, the non-shaded columns remain fixed.

Yes understand about using new window but I want it on the same sheet not a new window.

Maybe I am misunderstanding the question, but…
Open the spreadsheet document in Calc; then click once on the cell where you want the split of the main area to happen; then menu View > Split Window.
Beware: you can have either Split Window, or Freeze Panes, but not both at the same time. If you need both, then you need 2 Windows as a workaround.

I’ve tried the split, freeze, and new window methods, and they do achieve part of what I’m looking for.
It seems what I want can’t be done exactly the way I’d prefer, but that’s no big deal since I can still accomplish what I need.

Another way to say it is I want the new windows method but on the same worksheet not as a new window.

I downloaded your example file and this is what I tried after opening the file with Calc:
Menu View > Freeze Rows and Columns. This action removes the current Freeze Panes status.
Click once on cell D9.
Menu View > Split Window.
Position the mouse pointer over the lower-right quadrant.
Use the wheel of the mouse to scroll down/up.
While all the columns are scrolled (so columns A:C are not “fixed”) the information on the upper-left quadrant is always on screen while the columns are scrolled down/up.
I don’t know whether this represents your real-world needs, but in practical terms it “works” for the example you posted.

Yes, this partially gives me what I want. I set the split at cell D1. What I’m looking for is that when scrolling up and down in columns A:C (left quadrant), the columns from D onwards (right quadrant) remain fixed and don’t move vertically.

Selecting that specific cell D1 for the Split goes against what you want to achieve. Selecting cell D9 as I mentioned is a closer match; even a Freeze Rows and Columns at cell D9 is a closer match, as long as you see cell A1 on screen at the time you apply the initial Split or the initial Freeze action.
It’s still not what I would like to do.

No way, imo!
To get a useful answer it should be a good idea to describe what you eventually want to achieve.
Where should Row/Coluimn headers be for the two panes? Where the scroll bars?
If you definitely need two views of one sheet which are scrollable independently, it’s indispensable to create a second window as @LeroyG already suggested. You may then arrange the two windows by means of the GUI of your OS as you prefer their relative sizes and positions.
No, it does not open a new document. It opens another view on the same document which can be scrolled and navigated independently.

The image is the same sheet of your spreadsheet from your sample.
Window > New Window, arrange the two windows to suit. Maybe best if you try it with your sample.
