Writer applies character style to word around cursor

LO 7.4.6.2

If you choose a character style (or direct formatting, such as “bold”) without an active selection and with the cursor positioned inside a word, Writer applies that style to the word around the cursor (in addition to setting the chosen style as “current”).

I find that behavior quirky and would like to turn it off. Is that possible?

Sorry, but I really don’t understand your question. If you choose a character style or direct formatting, such as “bold” without active selection, what result do you expect? Make the cursor bold between the letters of a word?

No, sorry.
It is the behavior that the developers have determined.

Just checked, a well-known, competing word processor behaves the same. So the devs have existing industry practice on their side.

If do you need to begin writing with “a character style (or direct formatting)” inside a pre-existing word:

  • Select nothing
    • hold Shift, press Right Arrow, press Left Arrow, and release Shift, or
    • hold Alt and drag the pointer to select and unselect at least one character (the cursor will hide until you click again; maybe a bug here)
  • Apply the character style or direct formatting
  • Write
