Writer changes fonts etc when copied to another computer

We are creating an A5 booklet (between 20 and 24pages) in writer on a desktop computer for subsequent printing on the office canon 2535 copier printer. When we transfer the document to the laptop connected to the office printer certain settings are changed eg paragraph is changed from Verdana 6point to Times new roman 12pt. Pagination is corrupted as last few lines now flow over to a new page.
Many Thanks for any help that can be offered

Are there same fonts INSTALLED on the two compouters?

An ODF document will not contain the fonts, but the font names only. You must have same fonts on the computers where the document will be opened.

Of course there is an option to embed the used fonts into the documents, but only the really free and open source fonts will be embedded and the commercial ones, that have a license that allow the embedding.

The Verdana is a MS related commercial font.

In addition to @Zizi64’s comment, do you rely on some implicit configuration, like default configuration for fonts in Tools>Options, LibreOffice Writer>Basic Fonts (Western)? If you didn’t override this default in Styles of the text, the basic fonts are those defined on the computer. If default configurations differ, you’ll get different results.
Note you didn’t mention OS name, LO version nor save format.

Thank you Zizi64 and ajlitoz for your responses.

I have now changed the default configuration, hopefully this will solve the problem. Verdana is on both computers but it only changed the paragraphs where the font size is 6points it did not change those paragraphs where the font size is 9.5

The OS is win 10 and the LO version is 7.5.3.2(x86_64) and the save format is ODT

I guess you wrote your document entirely with direct formatting without using styles. Styles give you more reliability in formatting and layout because you (practically) no longer depend on implicit assumptions.

Please upload a small sample file here.

Thank you Zizi64 for your help. A sample from the amended file, the one that has been changed. I will let you have the same sample from the original creation. This may take a little while as I have to go to the original computer.

Thank you Zizi64, as per earlier email this is the original text.

That’s true. But also the styles differ on both of his provided files. If I remove direct formatting (Ctrl+m) I get “Liberation Serif” (12) in italics in

and “Verdana” (12) in italics in

for the default paragraph style.

Your files are visually identical on my computer (though they differ in 0.1 kB) except for an extra empty paragraph at end in “Original” and 12 pt empty separating paragraphs in “ref error” instead of 9.5 pt.

Clearing direct formatting reveals application of character styles (direct formatting always has precedence on styles). Emphasis has been applied in both files. You made this style a descendant of WW-Default Paragraph Font1. This latter style has no attribute set, but:

  • in “ref error”, Emphasis is just in its factory setting, i.e. with italics activated,
  • while in “Original”, you force font to Liberation Serif in addition.

What you get is the result of this difference. You may have a similar situation in your real case with Verdana/Times New Roman.

Fix goes through a rigorous styling strategy. This will also help to control contents overflow to next page (unless you erroneously design your booklet as page-oriented which is done more easily with a DTP application while Writer is flow-oriented).

Thank you @ajlittoz and and @Zizi64 for all your responses. I have learned a lot about the configuration of writer and the use of styles. The message I am receiving is that the two systems must be identical and to make proper use of styles. Thank you for your help and all your time it is very much appreciated. Bob
