Writer: Chapter not showing up in Insert > field > More fields

Greetings

  1. I am trying to insert chapter in each page
2 I followed directions from here:
  1. but when I follow those steps here Insert > field > More fields CHAPTER is NOT showing up in the list?
  2. How do I get that chapter tot show up in the list?

Thanks in advance

The post is a bit old (2018) I suppose that the terminology has changed. What was previously chapter, now is Heading. So what you have to insert is a HEADING
Insert > Fields > More fields >Document Cross-reference> Heading (Remember…, you must use styles)

You can open the document attached and see how it works.

Does anyone have an answer for me?

Thanks in advance?

If you really intend to get some help, help us to understand the complete problem. First, your environment: OS name, exact LO version, save format. Then what you did: explain step by step (you may have skipped or done differently part of the procedure explained in the reference).

The referenced question dates back to 2018 (seven years ago, which means “eternity” with computer). LO has undergone many evolutions since that time. In particular, wording has be revised because many casual users didn’t understand typographical accurate terms and other more general words. So it is likely that “Chapter” has been replaced by “Heading” (being more general in a sense).

Greetings

  1. I am trying to insert chapter information into either the header OR the footer. For instance, I have H1 header in the document for EACH chapter to demercate which is a chapter.
  2. I wish to insert #1 above with a simple sentence describing the chapter into the header or footer with each chapter.

  1. Put the cursor into the header or footer.
  2. Insert>Field>More Fields
The dialog which pops up allows to insert any field available in Writer; additional selection is needed.
  3. Go to Document tab (because you want to reference an element of the “structure” or outline of your book)
  4. In the Type list, click on Heading.
  5. The Format list allows to choose which detail you want to insert:
    • Heading number: only the number
    • Heading contents: only the heading text
    • Heading number & contents: both the number and text
  6. Up to level menu: the level you need, i.e. 1 for chapter usually.

Thanks for reply
but

  1. When I try to click on header number with contents in TYPE list in the forms field it FREEZES libreoffice?
  2. Should I submit a bug, and if YES< where do I submit bug?
  3. Do you have any other instructions?

In case you think it is an LO bug, check whether it has been fixed: install a 25.2 or 25.8 version (the latter has not yet bubbled up in Fedora 42; so it may still be one of the early adopters version or we’re too close to Fedora 43 for maintainers to care to upgrade to 25.8 in F42).

Bugs are submitted at TDF Bugzilla. Prepare a sample file to attach to the report and explain in minute detail what you do (the idea is that a dumb user can reproduce your issue).

Attach a reduced sample file here (1- or 2-page) making sure the problem still persists. If it also happens on my computer, it may be related to something weird in your document.

Perhaps I am not performing the actions correctly in your mini-tutorial you gave me here:?

  1. Up to level menu: the level you need, i.e. 1 for chapter usually.

I followed the above to the T – exactl

Do you have a video tutorial to show how to properly do it? y as you said.

Sorry, the information was a little old,Ç
Not Document , Cross- references is the correct

On the Refer using (3) you can see

  • Page Number (unstyled) Arabic number
  • Chapter ( if there are a Heading numbering insert the number of the numbered heading)
  • Referenced text ( the text of the heading)
  • Above /Below ( insert any of those words in function of the situation of the Heading)
  • Page number Styled ( if the page had a footer with other style tan arabic )
I do not know the rest of Number… ?

You can see the documentation

  • The Getting started guide has a chapter dedicated to Writer and a “title” to fields
  • And The Writer guide has a chapter dedicated to fields
    Bookshelf

Here’s a screenshot of what it outputted when I selected what you suggested

It only output “chapter 1” but not the title as in the right side.

Any idea why?

Wrong! If you use items in the Cross-references tab, you insert a reference to a specific (constant) heading. What is usually needed in a header or footer is the current (dynamic) heading. This field is selected in the Document tab:

Yes I tried: Heading > format > heading number with contents AND it froze Libreoffice!

Reduce your document to 1 or 2 pages, making sure the freeze still occurs and attach it to a comment.

I see nothing particular in the sample document.

A question may be: how do you generate this kind of “bibliography”? You styled it Body Text while a separate paragraph style would allow you to control the formatting independently from your main topic. But i don’t think this is a factor in the problem.

You seem to use styling. However I see no use of character styles, but there is no direct formatting either.

In your 600-page document, how do you emphasise words and citations? With a character style like Emphasis or Strong Emphasis? Or do you directly Ctl+I or Ctl+B? In the latter case, this contributes to huge document size inflation and in the extreme instability.

Are you using sections? If you inherited your formatting skills from M$ Word, Word sections are roughly equivalent to Writer page styles. A Writer section is intended mainly for a temporary change in number of columns. Using them instead of page styles is extremely expensive in performance. The same may happen with tables whose rows extend over many pages. The matter is made worse with line breaks inserted instead of paragraph breaks (less likely to happen when you use styles consistently because style swith can occur only at paragraph break).

Works fine here.

The only weird thing is that your chapter are at level 2, which suggest your books is made of “parts” you title with a Heading 1 paragraph. Is this so? Book title is usually styled (guess what …?) Title. Using Heading 1 for this is wrong.

Just a fool-safe question to make sure: when you Insert>Field>More Fields the dialog remains open after Insert to allow for other field insertions (at the same or different location). To dismiss the dialog, you must press Close.

Here Fedora 42 with KDE Plasma desktop, LO 25.2.6.2.

wow works fine on your side? Maybe I should try the original document on my other laptop?

Yes it ALSO froze on another laptop!

What the hell is going on ?

I dont fully understand:

would your quote here be making my document “Act up?”

The only weird thing is that your chapter are at level 2, which suggest your books is made of “parts” you title with a Heading 1 paragraph. Is this so? Book title is usually styled (guess what …?) Title . Using Heading 1 for this is wrong.

Just a fool-safe question to make sure: when you Insert >Field >More Fields the dialog remains open after Insert to allow for other field insertions (at the same or different location). To dismiss the dialog, you must press Close.

Should I do something different? If so, what should I do step-bystep?

First part of the quotation is about your decision on book structure. What is your goal with Heading 1? Where do you use it? Your sample shows you styled your chapter heading with Heading 2 (at level 2). What is your level 1?

The second part of the quotation intended to make sure you are aware that the field dialog remains open after insertion. Therefore, LO is not “frozen” just because you still see the dialog. When you press Close, does it go away?
