Writer does not allow images to be copied

For reasons I cannot figure out, Writer does not allow images to be copied (Win10) to save or make use of with other software. I noted that all other questions on the LO website here are concerned with copying images and inserting them into an LO Writer document. I’m trying to copy images which are in an LO Writer document for use in another format or another document. It cannot be done.

Example, a .docx Writer document with images that were previously (years ago) pasted or inserted; it is now possible to select the frame or the image itself. I can for example move the image out of the frame by dragging it around in the original document. In other words, it’s all editable so it seems.
However you cannot copy that image and use any imaging software (Photoshop; PhotoScape X) to paste into a new document from the clipboard. What you will “paste” is a frame shape with the dimensions of the original image. But none of the image data will paste. There is no means to select the image and edit it in an external application either, for the same reason.

Would love to know how to deal with this obstruction.
Thanks for help if you have an understanding and a straightforward answer.

Pleeeease avoid lecturing/ hectoring on what a great set of applications this is and how we must be grateful. It’s grown tiresome. I do need help with this issue though
Much obliged!

Was it converted from a Microsoft Publisher file (.pub)? The images from Publisher when converted to ODF seem to be shapes with an Area fill of the bitmap.

The most effective way to extract the images is to open the .ods (or docx) file with a Zip program and extract the images (copy to a location outside the archive) from the folder Pictures. Probably best to make a copy of the original file and rename the extension of the copy to .zip then you can open it in File Explorer and copy the images to another folder.

[EDIT: in docx the images are in folder Word > Media]

A less accurate way would be to select the image and click File > Export… , in the dialogue that opens select png, click Selection, and save it with a suitable name. A new dialogue will open, make a note of width, fill in required resolution field, e.g. 300 dpi (unless you guess original resolution then the image will be changed), then change width back to original size and OK.

MS Word is the one and only application made for editing docx files. Of course you can import docx documents into Writer as you can do with odt files in Word. But then you have to continue working with the native file format of the respective application in order to utilize the full set of availlable features. This is true for any document editor, movie editor, CAD application, any app producing files. When work is finished you export pdf, mp4, jpeg, dxf or whatever suitable file format to show the result of your efforts on a wide variety of computer systems.

Save your files as ODT and not as DOCX.
For me copying works without problems (pasted PNG file).

Pleeease give us the possibility to check your file. Then we may find a solution.
Otherwise we have to trust your “not possible”

As you read everything you will also have found out odt files are actually a bunch of comressed xml-files. So if everything fails, it is possible to uncompress the file and access the contents directly. This is also true for docx, but usually not mentioned on LO-pages, becaus this format is invented and “maintained” by Microsoft.

PS: … and give us a hint, wich Version of LibreOffice you are using. Sometimes it matters (Sorry, if this alredy is lecturing.)
