Writer freezing up when trying to print after making changes to page and paragraph styles

Hi,

Everything was working great, and then I made some changes to page and paragraph styles. Now Writer freezes up when trying to print and says “no pages selected.” The print dialog box doesn’t go away, just keeps popping back up. I also noticed that the print dialog box is different now. I searched the forum here and tried the safe mode start that was recommended to someone else and it has the same problems when trying to print from safe mode. Tried the restore last known good user config option as well to no benefit. I have to force quit Writer now to get the printer dialog box to go away. Using version 7.2.3.2 on an iMac running 10.13.6. Sorry for the long post, just trying to provide all the info I have.

Is it possible that it’s getting hung up on me making a first paragraph style that has a Drop Cap for the first letter? All the other changes were just margins and alignment (switched to justified).

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Gordon

Edit: I just upgraded to 7.2.5 and the problem still exists.
I’m thinking this has something to do with making the first four pages title pages. After that the printing wouldn’t work. Tried to eliminate the title page per website instructions but the page numbering hasn’t returned to normal and printing still won’t work.

You are free to style your pages to your fancy. The best thing you can do is to attach a sample file with the problem, ideally your document if it is not too long. In case contents is confidential, replace it by anonymous data (like “lorem ipsum”), provided this doesn’t remove the problem.

Yes, I can change both page and paragraph styles. The file is pretty big, 78,000 words (a book) so I didn’t want to upload that. I made a small file ( few pages) and did the same kinds of formatting, first page, title page, etc. and that file works fine. Just this really big file is having the problems now.

Save a copy of your file. Delete everything (or, say, all except your last title page and first content page, if you are OK with sharing that fragment or your work with the world). Upload that small/empty copy here.

Regardless of what happens to content, the underlying structural framework (like your custom styles) should be intact in the copy. Hopefully we will learn something from that.

Hi @keme1 ,

I’ve made some progress. I had a version saved on a backup disk from two days ago that had none of the recent style changes on it yet. I loaded that and it still didn’t work, however, I noticed that it did have the superscripts on there that you showed me how to make. After making the verse numbers into superscripts I changed the relative font size to 75% of the normal text, the default was 58%. I went back to default on the superscripts and now it prints as before!!! Wow, I think that was it. One weird thing still happens, maybe you can help. When I hit the print button, it comes up with a dialog box that is for single page, I have to hit cancel and then it gives the ranges option and I can enter the range. Also, somehow my total file size got reduced form 429 KB to 218KB in the process. Luckily I had the 429 KB on my backup disk, but do you have any idea what could have done that? All the pages and words are still there, just reduced file size. Thanks very much.

Sample file is needed to determine cause. Seeing that this is a challenge, a few guesses to get you started:

The “print hangup issue” may be connected to a soft- or hardware keyboard hangup

  • Switch off the computer.
Shut down from the apple menu ; any other procedure is liable to go into hibernation which is less likely to resolve issue.
  • Repeatedly hit/tap all the modifier keys (⌘Cmd, Ctrl, ⌥Option/Alt, :arrow_up:Shift, on both sides) to ensure there is no mechanical hangup.
  • Switch your computer on again.

Error message suggests that some “impossible” style setting confuses the print formatter

You may have accidentally switched on some setting when you modified your styles. In some cases the settings are not apparent until you try to print.

First, look for …

  • Keep with next in the Text flow tab
  • Hidden in the Font Effects tab
