Writer hangs when selecting material to copy -- text, tables, graphics

Copying and pasting in Writer can be improved. When selecting material to copy sometimes Writer moves quickly down the pages to select the information. Sometimes it moves down only a few pages. Sometimes it moves down a page or less. Sometimes it selects to the line break and sometimes not.

Could we have Writer do a more consistent job in the amount and rate of material selection for copy and paste?

How do you make the selection?

I left click at the left top line, move the cursor to the end of the line, then move the cursor to the end of the page(s).

OK. Your suggestion seemed to work in Safe Mode with View = Normal and a Header being present on the page. Thank you for the idea.

The selection process is very fast. So much so that it is difficult to stop it at the point I wish to stop the selection process. It would be useful to slow down the selection of the material when the cursor reaches the bottom of the area showing the page Also it would be useful to slow down the de-selection of the material when the cursor reaches the top of the area showing the page.

Could a programmer program a more gradual change in the vertical speed of the selection process when the cursor approaches the top and bottom of the area showing the page?

Too fast selection might be related to Bug 119745 - Scrolling with a laptop touchpad in Libreoffice way too fast

My workaround for longer text is to click at the start of the text and release. Scroll with mouse or scrollbar to end of desired text, hold Shift and click with mouse to select everything between.

EarnestAl, what a wonderful solution. Where did you discover this excellent idea? Thank you so very much.

This situation occurs with both a desktop and laptop using a mouse. I do not use the laptop touchpad.

When Microsoft Word had same problem in early 2000s

This is annoyingly not a ‘solution’ to the issue of jerky scrolling when dragging the mouse cursor to select text.
