Like in other commercial and also free office apps, selection is displayed only for the text but not for the whole line. LibreOffice displays selection for the whole line.

Reopen your question and improve its wording (click on … below it , then on the “pencil” icon). Do you complain about the selection not extending into the margins? This is intended in "continuity with triple- and quadruple-click:
- single-click positions the cursor,
- double-click selects word,
- triple-lcick selects sentence,
- quadruple-click selects paragraph.
A selection is supposed to contain text, exclusive of side “decoration”.
During your edit, don’t forget to mention OS name, LO version and save format. If convenient, attach a screenshot.

If you want a highlight rather than a selection then apply it to the paragraph (preferably to a paragraph style), not to the characters or character style
