I am new to Writer and still learing how to use it.
I need help with changing the Writer toolbar icon descriptions.
At some point in the past I was able to change the icon descriptions (to both toolbars) to long descriptions.
E.g. the icon for “Character Highlighting Color” shows the icon + the full description of “Character Highlighting Color”
At the time, being new to Writer, it made sense since it allowed me to see, at a glance rather than hovering the mouse, what each icon will do.
However, I would like to add more icons to the toolbar. Unfortunately this causes some of the newly added icons, with their long explanations, to go off the edge of the document and not be visible/available.
How do I revert to the short descriptions for the icons? Or, to no descriptions?
Preferable without using “Defaults” since I do not want to lose any other changes/additions I have made.
Menu Tools - Customize - Toolbars tab, and change the option to the right of the Target field to Icon only.
I don’t find it documented in the Help online, but in the Calc Guide 26.2: Calc Guide 26.2 - Chapter 16, Setting up and Customizing.

It works.
Two comments:
- Is there a way to do this for all icons at the same time rather than one-at-a-time? Though, my guess would be “No”
- I am on Writer version 26.2.4.2. When I follow the given steps I do not have the option of “Icon only”. I’ve attached a print screen of the options I have. Options are the same when I right-click on the icon or click on “Modify”
I found no option to do that for one icon at a time. So, it’s all or nothing.
Notice that your screenshot shows the Modify button options, not the menu button that appears next to the Target field.

You are correct. I was using “Modify” instead of the icon next to “Target”.
“Icon only” is present when using the icon next to “Target”
