LO Writer Version: 4.4.3.2 - copy/paste text or images does not work. Source attempts include PDF, website or Thunderbird or Gmail email body text, among other sources - and - a copy from MS Word will not paste formatting so there’s no help in doubling up the process…of course, a new computer in use was intended to be free of MS Office so I hope to find a solution to this essential function in my work.

I discovered & found a workaround for a `copy/“paste special”’ bug with v4.4.3.2 Writer. However, even whilst that bug was active, it was possible to copy/paste, so I cannot confirm the issue that you report.
I suggest first that you make sure whether your OS is placing stuff into the clipboard when you copy. As you discovered with MS Word, the stuff copied could be multi-dimensional:-
(Edit Paste Special... gives a menu to choose from the multi-entries)
There are 2 sides to this equation: 1) does the OS copy them 2) does LO make them available. You have not stated whether part 1 works, so any response stops there.
