Writer with pictures often fails

I had the same problem with NeoOffice and OpenOffice. I’ve just moved to LibreOffice 4.0.2.2 which seems much better in many respects (can create .docx) but images still sometimes disappear (not always, which makes it all the more puzzling). I work around the problem by creating and sending PDFs but it’s not really satisfactory.

Like the people above, I’d really appreciate a solution.

This is still happening in OpenOffice 4.0.3.3 but no longer seems to be a problem in NeoOffice 3.3 Patch 5 so I’ve switched back to NeoOffice.

This is still happening with

Version: 4.1.3.2
Build ID: 70feb7d99726f064edab4605a8ab840c50ec57a

On MacOS 10.9

I’m having exactly the same problem: images are disapearing after some open/save/close procedures. I get a “read error” instead of the image… since a lot of time

It’s really frustrating.

I’m currently using libreoffice 4.1.3.2 under Ubuntu 13.10 64bits (Intel Core i3 with 4GB of memory)

This is same problem what i faced, after writing 30 pages document with 15 network diagram this has happened. What I did is to import my document which is in .odt format to Google drive and downloaded in docx, or any other format… Now everything looks fine… We need the developer to fix this bug…

Still present in libreoffice 4.2.3.3 running on Ubuntu 14.04. Serious issue!

Just happened to me. It is almost like the headache we had with MS Words 15 years ago.

Memory definately seems to be the issue. I had been adding pics with the image cashe increased to 60mb, when I reached 63mb I started loosing pictures. Most worryingly I didn’t even get a ‘read error’ the pic was just not there, no space, no place holder. Now with cashe set to 160mb seems stable again. However another factor is what else is running, I found that if I was using 1-by-1 to play music in the background it caused more frequent errors, so that cashe is not inviolate - Vista 2GB RAM

I’m experiencing the same issue on 4.3.1.2.
After some images lost I unpacked the content - here’s what I found:

<draw:frame draw:style-name=“fr4” draw:name=“graphics5” text:anchor-type=“paragraph” svg:width=“79.02mm” svg:height=“40.25mm” draw:z-index=“25”>
<draw:image xlink:href=“Pictures/100000000000028000000146F6038007.jpg” xlink:type=“simple” xlink:show=“embed” xlink:actuate=“onLoad”/>
</draw:frame>Prisustvo SALVAGNINI grupe u svetu</text:p>

The picture having “Read-Error” in Writter is live and well at content Pictures folder - and it is property referenced in the XML.

— so, I’ve increased the Grahic cache memory size, closed all instances of LibreOffice – and reloaded the “broken” file. All images back – nothing to worry about !!!

how do I increase the graphic memory cache size

I have the same problem (12.04 system. Saving into doc solves the problem. How do you “increase” the image cache in Ubuntu, as it is suggested in some posts?

Still happening in 2015 with writer version 4.4.3.2 !!

Lost images in LibreOffice Writer:

I have the same problem in Libre Office for windows (10) 4.4.7.2 (and have had the problem in the last several versions). I left my document for some time and the images were lost when I returned, each image replaced by a same size and positioned outline, with an image icon and the report ‘Read-Error’. Thankfully the saved document was still intact. Checking out the suggestions-

A: Memory related: Related to the variables in the memory settings?:

  1. ‘Number of steps’; set at the default of 100: I’d not done 100 edits so unlikely to be an issue.
  2. ‘Graphics Cache: Use for LibreOffice’; set at default of 20MB: My document is only 200kB so unlikely to be an issue.
  3. ‘Graphics Cache: Memory per object’; set at 5.2MB: my whole document is only 200kB so unlikely to be an issue.
  4. ‘Graphics Cache: Remove from memory after’; set at 10 mins: after loading the 20 images I had to leave it for some time. When I returned my images were lost. As the loss was time related this is a possible cause.
  5. ‘Cache for inserted objects’; set at 20; my document had 20 *.png emojis so could be suspect, but I have another document with a single image which had the same fault (after a period of time) so this is less likely to be a cause.

B: Autosave settings:

  1. ‘Save Autorecovery information every’; set at 15 minutes. A possibility as it is time based.
  2. ‘Automatically save the document too’; is unchecked so presumably not relevant.
  3. ‘Edit document properties before saving’; is unchecked so presumably not relevant.
  4. ‘Always create a backup copy’; is unchecked so presumably not relevant.

Theory testing:

Test 1: So the likely suspects are the time based variables for the graphics cache and the autorecovery information. So as an experiment I reset both to over an hour. I then left the document open for maybe 5 minutes and the ‘Read-error’ had returned, so disproving either of these possibilities.

Test 2: The unlikely variables were the ‘Graphics Cache: Use for LibreOffice’ and ‘Cache for inserted objects’ both of which I reset from 20 to 40 (MB and number respectively). At this point I left the document open for over an hour and this time all was OK (no error report).

So based on a single test it seems that resetting these variables has resolved it (although it still could be entirely co-incidental and due to some other process or app conflict).
