Zotero toolbar doesn't show symbols

Hey everyone, I am not sure whether this is a Ubuntu, Libre Office or Zotero issue but since the issue is the LO plugin, I’ll try it here first.

I have installed zotero as well as LibreOffice via apt on Ubuntu 22.04.5 and I have this odd issue where zotero actually works (i.e. I can cite etc.) but the toolbar doesn’t include any symbols. See

  • default-jre is already the newest version (2:1.11-72build2)
  • libreoffice-java-common is already the newest version (1:7.3.7-0ubuntu0.22.04.10)
  • Under Options > Advanced > Java 11.0.30 (Vendor Ubuntu) is listed.

One weird thing is that toolbar is not called zotero but instead “Add-On 1”. It works on other computers and I could sworn that re-installing the plug via Zotero fixed the issue but now it’s back and I have no better idea. I already tried re-installing everything.

Not sure if that’s relevant but when (re-)installing the plugin it lists “/usr/bin/unopkg” as well as “/usr/lib/libreoffice/program/unopkg”.

The fact that there were two LibreOffices listed actually was the clue. I actually actually still also used the containerised snap version without knowing. I now just installed

sudo apt remove libreoffice
# Downloaded LibreOffice_26.2.0_Linux_x86-64_deb.tar.gz
tar -xzvf LibreOffice_26.2.0_Linux_x86-64_deb.tar.gz
cd LibreOffice_26.2.0.3_Linux_x86-64_deb/DEBS/
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
