calc suddenly runs very slowly

Running Version 5.3.1.2 on a reasonably modern Win 10 machine.

Very recently, data entry into a newly created calc spreadsheet has become very laggy. It takes a couple of seconds for each a cell to open to accept data. Newly entered data takes a few more seconds to appear in the cell. Moving to a new cell leaves the old cell blank for some some seconds before data reappears. Calculations that should be instant take a couple of seconds once the instruction has been entered.

Problem does not exist if I am editing an older existing spreadsheet. Even with old and new spreadsheets open in separate windows I am able to work normally on the old sheet and not the new. Seems to rule out computer problems.

I have tried both upgrading to 5.3.2 and uninstalling and reverting to 5.2.7/ I have tried renaming the App Data user file and seen a new one created. But the problem is persistent. Can anyone help sort it out please?

Any thoughts or guidance please?

I have exactly the same problem, but it’s not confined to newly created documents. I have a spreadsheet created a couple of years ago that behaves in the same way. I add data to it daily, and every day the first cell entry takes a few seconds to register. I’ve tried re-saving the document with another name but it makes no difference to this behaviour. I’m using LibreOffice version 5.4.1.2 (x64) on Windows 10 Pro, latest version.

I have found a fix, if not a solution to the problem. Browsing through other similar questions, I found a reference to disabling Java Runtime Environment which is done by unchecking a tick box at the top of the Tools/Libre Office/Advanced dialogue. Having done that the normal spreadsheet options happenn at normal speeds.

But that doesn’t explain why the problem has only just appeared, why it affects only newly created spreadsheets or which other Libre Office functions are likely to be degraded by the absence of JRE.

Words of wisdom from one who understands these things would be welcome

Hello!
I am using Libre Office 5.3 and find the Calc application very much slow.
Firstly, I tried the suggestion by disabling JRE; which helped just a bit in improvement of speed.
Secondly, I tried allocating more memory to the application and each Block, but in vain.

I hope someone may help in resolving the issue.
Regards.

For me, disabling the OPENGL worked.

Uncheck
Tools/Options/Libre Office/View/Use OpenGL for all rendering

This produced a large improvement for me.

Huge improvement for me too. Thank you!

I have found the solution:

open calc>tools>options>load/save>VBA propriety, and now uncheck everythings.

i solved

Bye

There is also another potential explanation: explosion of conditional formats.

If you have conditional formatting on a cell or row, and you copy or extend it or copy format, another conditional format entries are created. It is trivially easy to go from one row in the conditional format manager to hundreds or thousands of entries. This will make Libre Office run very slowly.

If this is your situation, there are two options:

  • delete all conditional formats

  • edit one conditional format to cover the entire range of cells and delete all the other entries.
