Poor image quality after upgrading to 5.3.6

After upgrading from 4.3.7 to 5.3.6 on Mac, the images in my documents look like something from a 1960’s video game. I create documents with lots of screen captures and the image quality is very important. I have reverted to 4.3.7 so I’m ok for now, but can this be fixed?

I don’t know if it’s related or not, but the toolbar icons in 5.3.6 also look like they are from a 1960’s video game. Maybe this is just modern styling, but it made the software very difficult to use.

I’m sticking with 4.3.7 for now, but would be grateful for any solutions.

Hi Lookers:

The font rendering engine was changed and it does not work. Fonts displayed on the screen are very poor.

See this post for some information. They will be rolling back to the old font engine in the next release.

Will just have to wait for the issue to be corrected. The 5.2.7.2 seems to be the latest version that works if you need to upgrade now.

A correction. We will not be rolling back to the old font engine in the next release. As the relevant message explains:

Looking into this again, I think there are two unrelated changes in this commit; forcing GDI for non-horizontal text which fixed the two bugs, and optionally not using GDI when not using OpenGL (previously we always used GDI when OpenGL was used). I think it was wishful thinking of my part to think the non-GDI code path is usable.

...

This should fix the newly introduced issues.

So, we only will revert some broken bits, keeping the new font engine.

I did notice that about the fonts - nowhere near as good as before. I will wait.
