How to Make Backup and Autorecovery Work Correctly?

I was working with two documents when both crashed. The setting under Options>Load/Save>General is that AutoRecovery data should be saved every 10 minutes. However, the automatically recovered documents are from two hours earlier.

I had saved both documents earlier today, but when I looked for the backup files, they were not there (but I can see backups for the documents I worked on yesterday). Under Options>Load/Save>General, the option is checked to always create a backup copy.

Here are my questions:

• Why are there no backup copies of the documents I had saved earlier today?  How can I make sure that a backup is created when I save a file?
  
• When a file is recovered with Autorecovery, why is the recovered version from two hours ago rather than 10 minutes ago?  How can I ensure that the data is saved every 10 minutes?

In addition to other answers you may get, for a more robust backup strategy, consider Timestamp Backup LibreOffice extension

Have seen many different methods. However, if one doesn’t mind installing some macros, I haven’t experienced better than TimedAutoBackup (mark_t answer) and add on (my answer). Once installed it’s all automatic. Starts saves when changes detected.

Sorry about last (now deleted) comment. Had macro in wrong place. Just tested ‘TimedAutoBack’ (with add on for backup placement directories & # of copies) on Xubuntu with LO v5.3 & v5.4.3.2 and both were successful. Shouldn’t be a problem using this elsewhere. Again, sorry for the now deleted confusing post.

for me the backup files are made every minute, but they are all of zero KB size :frowning:

@catbill My only concern is that you have an answer. I’m guessing you have installed the macros. If so, hope all is to your needs and satisfaction.
