font display poor within documents and spreadsheets

the View - Graphics Output options don't work and Hardware Acceleration greyed out. Is this an OSX problem or a Macbook Pro issue or just Apple taking the p* because I'm not using their freebies. I've tried the opengl options with no change the strange thing is the menu's are crystal clear but even the font previews make a retina screen look like a 1980's display.
