Cells appear blank

I had a column where each cell started with a blank line cells start with the new line character

I selected the whole column, opened the Find & Replace dialog and replaced each new line character with nothing.

Now even though the cells no longer start with a blank line they still look like they do:

Cells start with a blank line

Find & Replace applied

@indigoer,

The cells also end with a blank line. So edit (F2) each cell and delete it, or find “\n$” and replace with nothing.

So apparently LibreOffice Calc displays the last line when dealing with multiline cells.I was expecting the first line to be displayed, like in Google Sheets.

How a multiline cell is displayerd depends on

  • the setting for the row height:
    – Default is ‘Optimal’, but F&R doesn’t trigger an update.
  • the setting for the vertical alignment:
    – Default works like ‘Bottom’, but there are 5 specific options (I don’t know much about).
    – You can set ‘Top’ to get the behavior you seem to expect.

Anyway: Reconsider if you need multiline cells inavoidably. Try to avoid them wherever a sheet is not specifically made for ‘prettyprint’. If you are satisfied with the incomplete view basically, I cannot easily imagine a good reason for the multiline representation of the contents.

@indigoer,

To change vertical text alignment: menu Format - Cells… (same as Ctrl+1) - Alignment tab. Options are: Default, Top, Middle, Bottom, Justified, Distributed.
