Basic paragraph indentation and numbering

Running LibreOffice 4.2.3.3 I don’t manage to define basic paragraph numbering scheme.
I just want to define correctly 2 paragraph styles only and named:

• Title 1
• Title 2

I want to get a very basic numbering and indentation scheme I tried to mimmic here:

1.  Chapter 1              [style Title 1]
    1.1. sub chapter 1     [style Title 2]

2.  Chapter 2              [style Title 1]
    2.1. sub chapter 1     [style Title 2]

I have created these 2 paragraph styles and modified them from the Styles and Formatting tool.
Style Title 2 is linked to Title 1 since I want to keep them consistent.

But I can’t get the Title 1 correct indent of text after number to work. I entered a specification of 1.00 cm for the 1st tab, and a numbering scheme Numbering 1 specifying to add a tab after the number.
I applied this modification, but nothing happens.

The numbering scheme for both styles is Numbering 1. Nonetheless, the numbering stays wrong.

Here is the deception point I reached thus far:

1. Chapter 1              [style Title 1]
    2. sub chapter 1     [style Title 2]

3. Chapter 2              [style Title 1]
    4. sub chapter 1     [style Title 2]

I thoroughly read the documentation
but can’t see what I didn’t get right there.

Your approach using Styles & Formatting is basically good. However I would not use “Title” to start with but the Heading Style 1,2,3,…

Using these heading styles also have the advantages
1 - You can create an automated Table Of Contents.
2 - Indents etc. are most likely close to what you need.

Headings don’t carry automatically the numbering you want. This can be added by going

Tools > Outline Numbering > tab Numbering

From here on it depends on what style you want. Looking at you example I propose:
Level => 1-10
Number => 1, 2, 3,…
Characterstyle => None
Show sublevel => 10
The rest I would first leave at there default values. Although the next tab, position, I would first leave at default settings.

Now I recommend to create a sample text to see how the styles look like and what you want to change to your needs.

Where to change settings in respect to numbering you know now.
The other heading styles you need to adjust by selecting the heading style right click an choose modify.

Keep in mind, that all the setting you make are only for the document you have now open. If you want to keep these settings for future documents, your current document also as a template. Now you have the chance to set this template as the default template or a template you only use when you need this special format.

As indicated in the OQ: “I thoroughly read the documentation”.
I choosed my created paragraph styles just because I want to understand and manage what I will have to use a lot of times without the smallest worry. My trust goes where I understand how a software works.

I am already working on a very simple text: the one I displayed under the form of code extracts: just 5 lines and 2 created paragraph styles. As exposed: I don’t tget he basic indentation and numbering I want.

Does your answer mean I can’t get the specified basic result with 2 simple paragraph styles?

I have a very basic understanding trouble (perhaps requiring a new question).
I have 3 tools at hand to work with my paragraphs numbering: Paragraph styles, List styles and Tools > Outline Numbering…. Are all these 3 tools mandatory to create the basic numbering scheme I describe in this question?
