Inserting percentage symbol [closed]

Hello. In Calc, I used to insert a percentage symbol after an entered number by Format/Cells. Then under numbers click on percent, then put a reverse slash between the number and % to get a figure that was the same as on my spreadsheet, not one that had digits inexplicably added. I recently downloaded a newer version of Calc and went to do as described and got a Euro currency symbol instead. Is there a new way of doing this or is this a bug on the newer version? If anyone can help it would be appreciated.

Are you including a space between the number and the backslash as indicated in the example on the Number Format Codes page?
