Why dont my Excel charts work in Calc. Data Series is not recognised

Opening Excel spreadsheets in Calc(4.3.5.2)…Charts with Data Series are not updated upon opening i.e. the charts are blank.
When viewing the chart data in Calc the values are ‘1’ but in Excel they are a Series.
Any help would be appreciated.

If I select the chart (double click) then right click and select Chart Data Table…the table has 1 column with a heading of “X Values” and 2 rows each containing a 1.

Saved format (xls, xlsx or ods)?

If you open the dialogue box about ‘Data Range’ and ‘Data Series’: How do the range addresses look? (Are they syntactically acceptable by Calc? You may post examples.)

The file format is .xlsx

What about the Ranges? Are they written as they were if the document was originally created with Calc?

You may also try to update to V 4.4.3 or 4.4.4. The handling of xlsx gets continually improved as I’m said (no personal experience with that alien file type).

The data ranges are empty. I have tried it with the same file saved as .xls…same result.
OK I will try the update…thanks.

…and select Chart Data Table…

Calc itself (the wizard) will never create a chart based on a ‘Chart Data Table’. Such a chart would contain its data as a constant array, and will never update values based on sheet data. For that purpose Charts need the data ranges (as references). Charts containing their data themselves might simply be a bad construct. They exist, however, to be inserted into text documents. A sound chart copied from a Calc document and inserted into a Writer document wiil be converted into the castrated version with data table.

I no longer think your problem is related to the version, but to the curriculum vitae of your charts. There may be incompatibilities with MS Office components, of course, because they (MS) made up a mess a long time ago by trying to sell many components instead of one Office application obeying clear principles. (I cannot test with MS Office.)
