Scan for Hyperlinks in Existing Text in Writer

I have reference software (Bookends) that works with ODT writer files and creates bibliographies. However the DOI URLs for each reference are not converted into hyperlinks by Writer automatically, and I can't see how to scan the document and turn the URLs into hyperlinks automatically. Is this possible to do, obviously Writer has a way to do this while writing, but how can one scan in existing text?

Note that pasting any text with http:// links and they are not converted to hypertext links, so a solution would also benefit anyone that pastes text with http:// links into text documents (I assume lots of people)...

I have started reading the OpenOffice Basic document to see how easy it will be to write a macro for this. I'd rather use Python but the documentation is very poor.
