text highlighting issue (writer)

Hey guys, I have attached a document to help describe the problem.

Highlighting issue.odt

In the attached document you may have noticed that the black highlighting behind the text looks a little strange- it extends a fair way down below the text but doesn’t quite cover the top of it, making the word look “off-center”, and a bit harder to read than it should be.

I have tried changing the background colour, but since this word is in a paragraph with other words, changing the background colour changes the background colour for the whole paragraph, whereas I only want to change the background behind this word.

Furthermore I have also tried changing the text size, but the highlighting still looks the same.

Finally I have tried changing the “alignment”, but it only serves to move the entire paragraph around, and is obviously not designed to achieve what I am after.

Is there any way to adjust the highlighting so that it is covers an equal space above and below the text? Some sort of custom text style maybe?

You didn’t mention neither your OS, nor LO version.

This is what I see both in 5.3.0.3 and 5.2.5.1.

From what I experiment, highlighting covers font ascent above the base line and font descent below the base line plus same (symmetrical) spacing. The look you are complaining about may be caused by the fact that your higlighted word has no letter with descent. If you type a word like “aggregate”, you observe the converse effect (but for the “t”): the word has more higlighted spacing above.

The highlighted area is taken from the font property without any added or controlled space. Consequently, the answer to your question is: no, you can’t customise it.

Note: I have tried to fool the engine with hidden characters of various sizes but highlighting property is “local” to the character not to the word. I ended up with an even uglier effect than yours.
