How do I insert an image into a Writer document

Hi folks,
Just downloaded the suite and got registered right away because when I tried to insert a picture into a test document I couldn’t figure out how to do it. I clicked on the insert picture icon, browsed to my picture and selected open, which I thought would work. NO. Got a thing about "use this app to open. "

I tried to see if there were any questions and did find 5.1.0.3 - images not displayed and an answer from hannes. Said to check if images were disabled and try going to "tools - options - Libre Office- Writer - View. I’m sorry to be dense but WHERE do I find tools? This is a relatively new laptop to me with Windows 10 and I often have a time finding where anything is! I think I’ve seen tools somewhere, but not sure exactly where.

And also,I just saw we h ave to do that awful recaptchya thing every time we post here? I don’t have 20/20 vision anymore and find them very frustrating and difficult to do.

And isn’t there a scroll bar for this screen where we actually enter the post? If I wanted to enter something before the end I had to use the arrow keys. Again very frustrating.

And I wish you’d put something about a REQUIRED mete tag WITH that box instead of somewhere else because I didn’t know. Now I have to do that horrible recaptcha thing AGAIN?

Hope someone can/will offer some help here. thanks.

Agree about the scrollbars. It’s a bad design choice not to have them. Easy to add in CSS { overflow:scroll; } (or “auto” so scrollbars only appear when you type more than the initial size of the container, but Askbot chose not to do this for who knows what reason. It’s bad UX, but tolerable. You just reminded me of my initial annoyance, then I got used to it… But yeah, it sucks.

Adnin PLEASE e-mail me - I can no longer post QUESTIONS - can’t get past that recaptcha now. I left a message on blog and tried replying to the welcome e-mail, but I have gotten NO response. This is not a joke and I am not laughing. If I can’t get some help on this, I will no longer be able to use the product since I will be unable to get any help. I don’t use twitter anymore due to not wanting to overdo things with my eyes. VERY IMPORTANT that I get able to post questions again. PLEASE E-MAIL ME. E-mail addy should be somewhere in records where notes on these updates are sent. PLEASE AND THANKS.

I AM SORRY FOR SHOUTING BUT i AM FRUSTRATED TO THE MAX HERE. I have been PLEADING, PLEADING WITH THE ADMIN TO E-MAIL ME AND HELP ME BE ABLE TO POST QUESTIONS AGAIN. I have one now that is stuck in limbo because recaptcha won’t pass me. I have not gotten any response or help in this regard. I am not interested in badges but IN BEING ABLE TO ASK QUESTIONS because I can’t understand a lot of your dcs and q’s on my own . DOESN’T ANYONE CARE??? PLEASE SOMEONE E-MAIL ME AND HELP!!!

I see I have been wasting time waiting for any reply or help in continuing to use the community. I have NOT received any such help… So GOODBYE.

but WHERE do I find tools?

On the LibreOffice toolbar

You might find Tutorial, some useful hints on using images {Once square bracket too much, deleted. by @Hrbrgr } a useful resource when working with images.

Recaptcha will go away after you have been around a little. Scroll bars are for wusses

LO 6.0.7.3 options in Tools | Options | LibreOffice Writer | View are shown in the screen capture below [Upload problems resolved]

Thanks for the replies, Phlo, robieyd, and ebot (Hope I have the names correct, for as I said, my vision is no longer 20/20 and that text was VERY small. I did note that tutorial. It seemed pretty comprehensive - that is, if I can get to the point of actually being able to insert an image!

I looked for that toolbar to find the “tools” button and it WAS NOT THERE. Not when I first opened LibreOffice suite and not when I selected create document with Writer and got to the writer program. It wasn’t there! Is there some way to get it in view or did I download the wrong Windows10 version or something?

Hope to find out a bit more, so thanks in advance for some further assistance.

Did you know that most browsers allow you to zoom the size of text - and in some cases images - via the browser’s View menu item or by Ctrl + or Ctrl - ; that’s Ctrl key and the Plus or Minus key to increase or decrease the zoom. See your browser help for more.

As regards the Tools menu option, it is on the very top line of the LO window in every application and it is not an icon. If all else fails, try Alt T and see if the Tools dropdown appears. Pro tip: where a menu item has a letter underlined, Alt and the underlined letter will activate the menu dropdown.

Hi robieyd and thanks for replying again. Yes, I did know about changing the mag view in browsers. But the text names are in is SO small - I tried around 110% but still pretty small - so if I ever need to, probably even more mag would help! Thankfully, the rest of the page is generally ok.

But I have GREAT news - I am now able to insert images. First, thanks for the tip on alt - t to get the tools menu. Believe it or not, that menu WAS there, but I think when I changed the display theme here on my laptop made them “impossible” to view. So that was step 1, and thanks. BIG  Also thanks for the tip about the underlined letter ---- that is when I can see the menu item to begin with :-). Tech is sooooo much fun.

Step 2: I went back to that one archived question, #5.1.0.3. I didn’t find a box for “images and objects”, but the q. also said turn off use OpenGL for all renderings. So I did that and ----------(Hallelujah!) when I did a test - it worked perfectly!

So we’re off and running now I think.

Thanks robieyd and everyone . As I continue to get started actually using the suite now, I’ll be back if any more questions pop up.

You should have been looking in Tools | Options | LibreOffice Writer | View as written in your question.

Apparently you used Tools | Options | LibreOffice | View instead which has the OpenGL option. Shoulda gone to SpecSavers

And yes, my vision is no longer 20/20 either.

I rechecked both of those options after seeing this comment and NEITHER showed a box for images and objects. No idea what SpecSavers is… At any rate disabling that OpenGL seems to have worked.

The former, Tools | Options | LibreOffice Writer | View does have an option for images and objects - see the edit in my answer for a screenshot of LO 6.0.7.3

The latter does not, as I think I tried to suggest, have that option.
