I am doing final, (about 11th check) of my story. and noticed that i was near the end of the document but was only at page 153 of 348.
Frequently i have lost paragraphs before but this is scary.
I always keep a copy on a usb drive.but i am wondering what i could have done to trigger this latest disappearance.
Everybody here also can only wonder, but not even guess reasonably what you could have done.
You help somebody with experiences concerning large Writer documents to help you probably by unveiling
- on what OS you are.
- what version(s) of LibreOffice you use.
- what (so called) file format you are using.
- if somebody else worked with the document (inserting comments e.g.).
- if changes were recorded.
- if any specific objects (images, Ole, …) were inserted
- if any crashes occured.
- what you learned concerning the reasons of previous losses.
- …
…but i am wondering what i could have done to trigger this latest disappearance.
Probably you have disconnected the USB stick from the computer too early, See Also:
Preventing data disaster
- on what OS you are.
Wiin 10
- what version(s) of LibreOffice you use. Auto update ON so current
- what (so called) file format you are using. odt
- if somebody else worked with the document (inserting comments e.g.). NO
- if changes were recorded. No
- if any specific objects (images, Ole, …) were inserted No
- if any crashes occurred .Not recently
- what you learned concerning the reasons of previous losses.
Shift-Pos1, then Del - just two Keystrokes.
.
But you should find out, why you loose pragraphs. If you can loose small amounts of data a computer can always “improve” this and loose more data more quickly than you…
.
If you can not use a stable system create backups often and KEEP the versions. Otherwise you may loose data, save and then copy this to your USB. Now all your versions habe lost data. So use save copy as and append revisions to the filename like Text-rev11-p153 or just append date and time.
.
Second problem with your approach is real disaster hits when you do your backup to USB-drive and looses open files. Again both versions may be corrupt or lost. Therefore it is usually recommended to have more than one backup (switch between two usb-drives) AND to keep another backup at an external place because fire/flooding etc may get computer and backup at the same time.
.
I would expect an corrupt file then, but not a distinct loss of pages inside an zip-archive. IMHO the error happened before saving.
What is “autoupdate” here? Do you use a version from MS Store, or do you use a package manager like chocolatey, or do you mean the “update available” notifications in normal MSI packaged version available from libreoffice.org site?
Anyway, even knowing all that, it is not a substitute for a clear “version X.Y” (or better, “X.Y.Z”) statement, because no person intending to help you here is required to know which version is distributed at this moment as “current” on any of these channels; or if you / your provider had some network problems recently making updates unavailable; or any of infinite other variables.
Apologies I struggle with computers, it isn’t so long ago I still used an abacus
Win10 on PC laptop (not Apple)
Libre office 7.3 that is automatically updated by Libreoffice.org
I’m 82 and memory is sometimes patchy, over the weekend I remembered that the page numbers had disappeared a couple of weeks ago at the same time as something resembling a tall letter i was in front of the first word on the page (Chapter 8) and also a grey square shape at the end of the word.
I wonder if unsuccessfully attempting to delete these caused the loss of half my story, from which I have been able to recover from the copy on a usb stick
I note that there is a hesitation, seen by the page numbers pausing momentarily in the bottom LH corner, when downloading from the usb stick to the computer where the page numbers in the document disappeared and where the half story also disappeared.
Thank you for your helpful info I only wish I could remember new info so I will save your response as a document. I replied to Mike Kaganski as that was the item on my screen.
FYI I paste my reply to him
