I am using version 4.4.5.2.0 (user interface: English USA) on Windows 10.
When I try “check for updates” it says “LibreOffice 4.4 is up to date.” - it does not mention version 5. Is anything wrong with my set-up?

No, that is normal behaviour.
Still is currently 4.4.5, and all updates shown will be in the 4.x series.
Fresh is currently 5.0.2, and all updates shown will be in the 5.x series.
At this moment, 5.0.2 on win10 is an utter dog, so I would advise you to stay where you are.
