the default font can’t be changed from the preferences. How do I change the default font. It changes back to some an ugly font I have never used. It even changes the font in one cell if the content is deleted with the delete key.

Please take a look Default template, create one for you with the preferences you like.

Test with Menu/Help/Restart in Safe Mode.
