Add captions to docs without adding the field

TL;DR
I am looking for a way in insert a caption (tables,figures etc) without inserting the actual table/figure.

I have seen this thread: Caption without frame
Up til now I have been inserting tables, adding captions, then deleting the table but keeping the caption.

The document I am working on will go through several rounds of edits and our team is not all using LO, so the fields get broken and need to be replaced. As you can imagine the process above makes the whole saga that much longer.

The figures and tables are external to LO because there are several figures and tables (and some quite large). The team finds it easier to open the images separately from the main text. This is also how the doc will be submitted to the publishers.

When you Insert>Caption, choose Category [None] from the drop-down menu.

My drop-down menu won’t let me insert captions unless there is a frame open.

What I am using now :
(with keybindings)

• insert minimal frame
• insert caption

This is pretty much what I was looking for but it took a while to get it to play along.
