I found how to add the division symbol (a dot above and below a line) but little boxes on either side of the symbol are added. How do I add the division symbol without them or delete them after the symbol is added. The little boxes also print which is not what I want
You have two solutions:
-
You want a formula reduced to the sign
Sincediv
is an operator, the formula into which it is a part must be syntactically well-formed. This is only possible by adding “dummy operands” as
{} div {}
Note the pairs of curly braces. -
You only need Ă· in your Writer text, no formula just the sign
Type “U+F7” and immediately Alt+X. This is DIVISION SIGN. There also exists a HEAVY DIVISION SIGN at U+2797.
Didn’t work … tried both ways and got this {}{} {}div{} U+0055. The first {}{} shows in the document like that with the division sign in there but with the placeholders
This is LATIN CAPITAL LETTER U, not DIVISION SIGN U+00F7.
What have you done exactly? Attach a sample document.
Typed {} {} tried to add it from insert - object with cursor in between braces got
{} {}
Typed {}div{} got same
U+F7 then Alt+x got (shift u thenF7) then (alt and x)
U+0055
This probably means you left the <?>
placeholders in the formula. Attach a sample file for more accurate diagnostic.
Division sign: you must type the sequence “letter u” “plus sign” “letter f” “digit 7”; leave the cursor at right of digit 7; press key combination Altx.
If you got U+0055, this means your cursor was at right of “letter U”.
Ok thanks, U+f7 then alt and x worked
For other symbols you want to place in text (not in Math) you can click Insert > Special Character and in the search box start typing the first characters of the name. Select the character you want and press Insert button. If the maths character you want is not in your selected font, try OpenSymbol font
