Adding words to the dictionary issues...

Hello All,

I have been using LibreOffice for about 9 or 10 years, and the only thing that frustrates me about it, is this:

No matter how many times I add words to the dictionary, when running a spellcheck, the same words come back as spelling errors whenever the document is reopened. This is somewhat irksome, as I am continually having to add the same words, every single time that I reopen a document, whether that is a writer, or calc document; it takes up time doing this, repeatedly.

Am I missing something, or is this normal?

As I mentioned above, I have been using LibreOffice for almost a decade now, and this issue has been ever present, in every single version that I have had; and yes, I do keep it up to date.

Please can someone help me with this, or at least, reassure me that I am not going round the twist, lol.

Many thanks

No details so only generalisations

  • Do you close LibreOffice before closing the operating system? There might not be enough time for LibreOffice to write the information before it is shut down.
  • When you start LibreOffice, do you often find you need to recover files? If so LibreOffice might be crashing rather than closing.
  • Note that Ignore will ignore the error for only the current session. If the document is reopened later the same errors will be flagged again.

Are you using en_US or en_UK language?

UK English

Do you have the same problem with US English?

nope.

OK, so I’ll give you all more details:

Regardless of whether I am using LibreOffice Writer, or LibreOffice Calc (for my monthly budgeting), the same words are continually flagged as spelling mistakes, such as company/products names; some place names, and even occasionally, personal names; many accepted standard abbreviations, like cont., etc., inc., for example.

I constantly save whilst writing these documents, and after making any changes. I have to save these words to the dictionary, EVERY time I run a spellcheck!

My current OS is Windows 11 Pro, and previously I have run on Windows 10 Home, Windows 8 Home, and Windows 7 Home; this has been a persistent issue, on ALL of those Windows OS versions!

My pc is turned off, in most cases, hours after LibreOffice has been shutdown, and I NEVER shut LibreOffice down before it has completed a spellcheck, or finished saving a document. I update LibreOffice, as soon as a new update notification alerts me to it.

There, is that clear enough; plain enough; detailed enough? Or shall tell you all what I ate for breakfast, as well?

Honestly, I cannot believe that out of 69 views, in 5 days, the only responses have been a rather patronising AI snippet of egg-sucking usefulness, and two rather pointless, one word comments, from a 3 lettered nobody!

Great community, thanks for all the helpful feedback and suggestions!

None of us can see your computer so we must ask questions. Concise but complete answers are best.

Seeing as you aren’t answering questions, I can only suggest you backup and then reset your user profile, LibreOffice user profile - The Document Foundation Wiki

EARNESTAL

What EXACTLY do you mean, by saying that I am not answering questions? Is my post from yesterday invisible?
I’ve had 3 (three) different pc’s in the time frame covered in my above post. My latest pc is a gaming pc, with very high spec, which is only 7 weeks old.
Would you like me upload a photo of it, so that you CAN see it?
Not sure why you need to SEE my pc, when my original question, is really quite simple; why won’t the words that I add to the dictionary, remain in the dictionary, permanently?
I use UK English, and that is what I set the language to; no problems with that bit.

3 different PCs? Please see the link to user profile and look at wordbook, you can copy this folder to a new computer to transfer your additions to that computer.

When I said we can’t see your computer, I meant we can’t see what you can see on screen or your settings, error messages, etc. We have to rely on what you tell us, we shouldn’t be abused for asking.
Goodbye

Your problem is clear. The cause not at all. And the problem is, you write a lot of text, wich gives decorum but no important details.
.
The feature works usually without problems, and your question was “Why not here?” - My approach is often more “I can’t find out why. Let’s start fixing it instead.”
.
Some hints:

I don’t. But the point is: Updates don’t change your profile. That is the way how your personal settings (and dictionaries) “survive” the updates. Sometimes odd errors are caused by profile-problems, therefore the suggestion to reset your profile after backup by @EarnestAl (This will not answer “Why?” but may remove the problem.)
.
Other sources of problems:

Where did you set the language? Did you check, if your paragraphs are set to the same language? LibreOffice can handle more than one language in one document, so the language set in paragraph styles is important. I don’t think this is your problem, as in most cases your corrections should land in the same dictionary, wich is needed later for a second correction. But there may be cases where the needed dictionary is not available.
.
Security settings:
Some over-protective anti-malware software may “protect” you and prevent changes outside your Documents-folder. As Windows has funny ideas where to place application data this may prevent/restore changes to your dictionaries. (From the point of a manufacturer any other software, not sold by them is bad/insecure/dangerous… )
But only you can know, what you use. And sorry this will not help:

.
Maybe for some reasons your LibreOffice is permanently in safe-mode (ignoring the profile with the dictionaries) or always starting with a fresh one. Possibilities are endless

.
And maybe you should think on your perception, when you rant here:

Maybe the other 66 viewers (I was one) just thought: Lets wait for more/useful details. At the moment there is nothing more to say.
.
You are quite quick with your judgements: Al may only be an abbreviation to popular names, and @EarnestAl is much longer active here than AI is hyped (again). Do you see the difference: Al / AI If not ask Calc to compare the strings…
And before you name somebody as “three lettered nobody” you are welcome to check the persons profile (click on the big F or avatar). Most of us are using usernames, so we are all nobody. And do you really think adding _the_mod to your three letter makes any difference?
.
So good luck with solving YOUR problem.

I ran into a possibly related problem.

A word that I knew was in my personal dictionary (I even looked to ensure) kept showing up as possibly misspelled.

The solution was to turn off LanguageTool.

Tools -> Options -> Languages and Locales -> Writing Aids

Available Language Modules

[ ] LanguageTool Remote Grammar Checker

As I like LanguageTool, I set it up in Google Chrome browser. It’s a little less convenient, but one chooses their battles in life.
