Libre Office 7.0.4.2 MacOS. I entered comments alongside paragaphs of text (in Writer)using alt-cmd-c. When I now try to edit or add to the body text the writing is in Yellow as if it is highlighted. I cannot find how to switch this off and return to normal editing.

probably you inadvertently enabled Track Changes mode. To disable:
Edit -> Track Changes -> [ ] RecordEdit -> Track Changes -> Accept All
