I want to animate one letter at a time, so my students will see the word first, “Vowel” then see the “o” and “e” in bold or underlined, to see that those letters are vowels.

In the AnimatedLetters.odp example I drew a text box in which the vowels are underlined. This text box is placed on the non-underlined text. It appears on click.
