Automatically use cell/range names instead of column and row in Calc expressions

I’m new to “Ask”. Have searched Options, Help, wiki, here, mailing lists, and Bugzilla. Apologies if answers are there or if this is a duplicate request. I can update with an example file if requested, but the question is simple enough that the following description should suffice.

My spreadsheet has named cells and ranges which I’d like to use in expressions. For example, cell B1 is named “income” and B2 “expenses”. If I enter a formula in B3 by typing “=”, then selecting cell B1, then typing “-”, and then selecting B2, I get the formula “=B1-B2”.

But I want the formula to be “=income-expenses” (that’s why I named the cells in the first place). Of course this can be done by typing in the names explicitly, with or without auto-completion. But it is much easier to select cells and ranges with the mouse when entering formulas, summations, etc.

Is there some option that I’ve missed? I can’t believe I’m the first person to think about this. Should I submit a Bugzilla enhancement request? It would also be nice to have a menu command to retroactively change all formula cell references from column and row to names if the names are created after the formulas.

Again, apologies and thanks for any help if these features already exist, especially if by coincidence they were added after the 24.8.4 release I’m currently using.

I think, the feature is not yet implemented. For requests see tdf#64228 and tdf#55737.

Thanks, @Regina, for the information and the links. I apologize that I couldn’t find them myself.

Like I said, “I can’t believe I’m the first person to think about this.”

But given that the the feature requests and other posts date back to 2012, with the last activity being to lower the priority in 2019, it seems this won’t be implemented any time soon, if ever.

FWIW, I updated 55737 – Names of cells when clicking on it. I’m not expecting any activity, but one can always hope.
