I am running into issues when I open files from Excel. I make the necessary changes to the document, save and exit. When I reopen the program there are blank boxes that block all text. I can click and delete these boxes but there are often as many as 30 boxes in front of the text. Has anyone else run into this issue and know how to prevent these boxes from occurring?

It is very important to understand what changes you did and how. When you say “boxes” to you mean cells of whatelse do you mean. Why do you save in xls and not in ods format?
I have exactly the same problem. I have just (13 Jan 2015) posted several comments in Question ‘Infinite white boxes’, tags: calc, .xlsx shapes, posted by ‘cait’ (is there a better way of referencing a Question?) I’m new to this stuff, should I re-post my comments here?
