Both Versions of Libre Have Stopped Working on Windows 11 Home

I first noticed this problem about a week ago. At the time, I figured it was a temporary issue, and that doing my normal routine of shutting down for the night and restarting the next day would fix it, but, as I found out today, it didn’t.

Basically, when I try to open any of the Libre programs, I’ll get a couple seconds of a loading icon on my mouse, and then nothing else. At around 7pm, I opened the task manager and found 5 instances of Writer running as background processes, but nothing else has popped up since.

Things that I have done to try to fix this:

  • Open Libre in safe mode (same result)
  • Whitelist Libre in security settings
  • Modify the user profile/generate a new user profile (I changed the name of the original user profile to “userold,” but trying to start Libre after had the same result and didn’t generate a new profile)
  • Uninstall and reinstall 25.2.4
  • Uninstall 25.2.4 and install 24.8.7

Try uninstalling…

Renaming a profile is not the same as creating a new profile. You need to create a new user account. Here are five ways to do it.

Additional instructions

Before uninstalling:
Type services.msc in the taskbar search box, click the services.msc icon that appears at the top. Search LibreOffice Maintenace Service, right click on it and select properties, if running shut it down. Select Not in use for Start method in the dropdown box, click Appy, Ok and close the window. Right clik on the taskbar and select Taskmanager, select the Startup Applications tab, select LibreOffice, right click and disable. Now restart your computer and uninstall LibreOffice. If your Windows Home is running in S mode, then do as described behind the first link. Download LibreOffice .msi right click the icon, Apply and click Ok and then reinstall.

Can you enlighten me on your idea behind this suggestion?

Well, if someone wants to solve the problem by creating a new profile, then a new user account has to be created. I wouldn’t resort to that, even if it might work in some cases.

No. Someone renames the old user profile, so it is not found by LibreOffice on start. LibreOffice will then create a new profile.
.
No need to create any new (Windows-) accounts.

Windows defaults to hibernation when you click power off. Try clicking Start menu - Power - Restart to reboot Windows and see if that clears the problem.

Note: you can set power off to actual shutdown by turning off Fast Start in Windows power settings

I did assume it was Windows 11 Home that caused the problem.
But let’s start again from the beginning.

If you are using Windows 11 Home:

Windows 11 S mode is a version of Windows 11 that is specially designed to improve security and performance. It limits the installation of apps only from the Microsoft Store, which reduces security risks. In S mode, Windows 11 is only available as a Home version.

One-way switch:
Leaving S mode is a permanent action and you cannot go back to S mode.

How to exit S mode?

Open the Microsoft Store

Go to the page where you can exit S mode (Switch out of S mode)

Select “Get”

When the confirmation message appears, you can also install apps from sources other than the Microsoft Store.

Once the above is done:

If you are having problems with your installed LibreOffice software, I recommend that you follow these instructions:

Type services.msc in the taskbar search box, click the services.msc icon that appears at the top. Search LibreOffice Maintenace Service from the list, right click on it and select properties, if running shut it down. Select Not in use for Start method in the dropdown box, click Appy, Ok and close the window. Right clik on the taskbar and select Taskmanager, select the Startup Applications tab, select LibreOffice, right click and disable. Now restart your computer and uninstall LibreOffice. Navigate to C:\Users\yourprofilename\AppData\Roaming and delete LibreOffice folder.

Download LibreOffice .msi installer, right-click on the file icon, select “Properties”, go to the “General” tab, and check the “Allow” box on the right down corner, Click the “Apply” button to save the changes and remove the security restriction. Click “OK” to close close the Properties window and click the .msi installer icon to install.

I guarantee that your Windows Home & LibreOffice problems will go away. Instead, I am 100% sure that no changes to LibreOffice settings will fix the problems with Windows 11 Home and LibreOffice installed from the .msi package.
