Bullet list different size but same type of bullet error

Hello everyone,

I have a bullet list on a document. They are te same type of bullets: “Solid small ciscular bullets”, but each is different size, I don’t know why.

Here below is a screenshot. Because the small circular are a bit too small for the sample, I changed them to “Solid Large”, still the same problem, but even more obvious. Any reason for this?

Such a selective screenshot can’t help at all. Attach a sample document. Also edit your question to mention OS name and LO version.

I have edited the original post and added a file.

Bullet size depends on paragraph-level formatting, i.e. on the character size set at the paragraph level (either direct paragraph formatting, or paragraph style).

When you select the whole paragraph (e.g., using four mouse clicks), and change character settings (e.g., size), the changes apply to the paragraph. If you only select part of a paragraph, the character settings apply to specific characters inside the paragraph.

The best would be to clear direct formatting, and use styles to control it all with precision.

A Style Inspector appeared in 7.1 also may help understanding formatting details/differences.

You have too many direct formatting applied to your text. Learn how to work with styles. Read at least the Writer Guide.

Styles operate on your text in three layers, from bottom to top:

  1. Paragraph style: defines base formatting
  2. Character style: provide variations on the base style
  3. Direct-formatting: manually applied

When the three layers cover the same sequence (or character), the higher layers override the lower layers.

In your case, modifying Bullets character style could not supersede the direct formatting layer.

Please note that, when taking into account only character and paragraph levels, there are four layers:

  1. Paragraph style
  2. Paragraph-level Direct-formatting
  3. Character style
  4. Character-level Direct-formatting

It is important to realize that the direct formatting (DF) may be applied at different levels - and that adds to the complexity.
