Bulleted and numbered lists immediate after pressing space

I type 1. and press space. Why doesn’t it start numbering automatically?

Type something after the space and then press Enter

Well “numbering” is an elaborate concept. It is a property of a paragraph. I.e. Writer needs to know which paragraph to apply numbering to. While you’re typing your text at end of it, you’re actively “building” a paragraph (though there is already a paragraph mark at end of text). The paragraph is known when you hit Enter.

But, ticking or unticking the option seems to have no effect.

Personally, I prefer to disable all these auto-correct options because they end up in direct formatting and you don’t know exactly where your list starts and ends. This auto-numbering feature is a port (imitation) of the feature in Word where there is no list style and you must have contorted heuristics to format lists. The end result is a formatting and list delimitation which heavily depends on your editing history, leading to “surprises” on edits.

When asking here, always mention OS name, LO version and save format due to differences between platforms and formats.
