Bullets Indentation

The specific problem I face while using Writer is , for the sub-levels, the indentation of the bullets/numbering towards the right does not take place. With great difficulty I can fix this some times, but not always. In other words,

Instead of

   1)
   2)

I get,

I did not face such simple problems in earlier version of Office , but only in the newer versions.

I think there is more than sufficient information in the post, and you clearly know what I mean. Nevertheless, the version of your Libre Office I use is 6.0.7.3. I use the Bullet button on the tool bar for creating an item list and use the right indent button on the tool bar to increase the indentation level, but the right indentation does not take place. I worked around by changing the paragraph settings for the bullet list, but even that does not work now. I would not have bothered you, but chose to post out of sheer frustration.

BTW, for being rather poor ape’s and clone’s of Unix and Microsoft products giving both of them a bad name, that is a pretty arrogant comment; but perhaps not as presumptuous as you trying to champion the cause of freedom. If you cannot even properly cut and paste proprietary buggy code to begin with, without introducing more bugs into the code, what are the odds you will liberate and free your own malware, spyware, trashware, recyclebinware of your own bugs even, much less actually design and develop software that is truly in honor of and a testament to and a tribute to true freedom and true liberation, and a shining example of what propriety(not misspelt) software should be. Could you possibly value freedom more than money, both yours and others ? Money does not even buy itself and cannot even keep its own value, and the value of today’s money is always less than the value of yesterday’s money, and money is always only the bottom line, never the top line, and the products that money buys are always only above the top of the line in terms of price but also always below the bottom of the line in terms of quality. I guess, if you cannot be of help, you can always be of harm and expect other people to stay out of your harm’s way.

Edit your question (don’t answer) to explain how you create your list: through toolbar buttons or ad hoc paragraph list? Instead of “newer versions”, mention your LO version.

I read the “updated” answer, and have a strange feeling that OP is trying to be arrogant to fellow users on this peer-to-peer helping site, not realizing that she/he is replying to other users, and since the question got the advise to clarify, that must mean that it wasn’t clear enough for other users (something to think about and improve, not to try to look like asshole)?

You must understand that any software application is based on chosen primitives which then lead to the way of driving it. LO Writer deliberately developed the notion of styles far beyond what is found in other document processors. This design choice is full of consequences: the best of all is the capability to partly bridge the gap between simple document processor and full-fledged desktop publishing applications. The counter part is the learning cost to fully master Writer.

This is why toolbar buttons are provided as shortcuts for frequent actions (bold, italic, etc.) or complex procedures (bulleted/numbered lists, etc.). However these buttons should never be used for sophisticated formatting because they set default parameters not customised for everyone’s context. There OK for experimenting (quick’n’dirty trials) or one-shot dependable documents.

Also, nowadays applications, to meet some success, must offer as many features as competitors, which make them complex. If you don’t read the documentation, don’t expect to solve the kind of situation you’re confronted to. Procedures acquired with other applications won’t help because of the different design primitives.

Your first task is to read the above linked documentation or at least the built-in help (F1).

In the manual, you’ll discover that formatting lists created with toolbar button is controlled by Format>Bullets & Numbering in tabs Position and Customize.

If you can understand a semi-technical argument, lists are objects needing a paragraph and a “numbering” style. The numbering style takes control over the paragraph left parameters, among which the left indent which explains why the Increase Indent button is ineffective in lists.

If this doesn’t solve your problem, once again edit your question and try to be as matter-of-fact as possible, describing step-by-step what you’ve done an what you expect. Remember that we’re just other users, not developers nor LO salesmen, and that English may not be our native language.
