Calc Chart x-axis labels are different to actual data

A Calc chart that I have created uses a Row of 12 date values (21 Jan 23, 21 Feb 23, …21 Dec 23) as the x-axis labels. The Data Range indicates the Row data has identified the correct cell range for these dates and the “First Row as Label” is checked. The Chart decides to translate these row dates as (1 Jan 23, 1 Feb 23,… 1 Dec 23). If I change the format of the dates to (21/01/23, 21/02/23,… 21/12/23) the Chart then produces (01/01/23, 01/02/23,…01/12/23). I have no idea why it does this or how to fix it.

Please upload an ODF type sample file here.

Bring the chart in edit mode and look at Format > Axis > X-Axis. That dialog has a Numbers tab. The default setting is “Source Format”, which means same as data source. But you can set a different format there.

Pay attention to the language because date formats depend on language, both in the spreadsheet and in the chart.

In Format > Axis > X-Axis select the Scale tab and set the Type to Text

Dates and times are a special case, many people want data by month but the dates sometimes don’t match exactly so all data within a month can be part of that month. When you explicitly change the range in a Date format, then Calc “knows” those are dates and applies the appropriate scale type to the graph.

The x axis of a SCATTER graph will not show the x values of the actual points. It shows a numeric range (date range) and some values depending on the Scale settings and other settings.

Thanks - that solved it. I appreciate the logic behind the explanation - but the subtly of its manifestation didn’t really give any clues as to why it was happening. I shall try and remember this for the future. Thanks again. I was just about to erase the axis labels and rewrite them in Impress.
