calc printing and formatting cells

I print labels for pinning insects from a calc spreadsheet. I never had problems until recently, now everything is out of wack.
I’m a simpleton who doesn’t really understand formatting and such, but I’ve always been able to push things around and make it work until now. I’m using the same spreadsheet I’ve always used, that I save in excel format because every now and then I need to use it on a Windows machine.

All I need is 4 or 5 short neat lines per cell, font 4.
Previously I could just type in my lines and when it looked good, it printed good. Now there are unwanted spaces, lines end up printing on a different line from where I see them, its just a complete mess.

How can I get it to print the way I see it?

Good freakin grief, nothing works the way I want it to. Maybe I need to start over with a new sheet. How can I set it up so that I can just type a line of about 20 characters, then go to the next line of 20 characters, then the next? I can’t even create a new line in this spreadsheet, pressing Enter sends me to the next cell.

OK, THANK you for reminding me how to add a new line. I only do this once or twice a year so some things are just bad memory, That really helps BUT the cells still don’t print the way they look. There are huge spaces, the start of one line prints at the end of the previous line…just Fugly.

I somehow managed to get some labels printed properly by starting over with a new sheet and using some of the suggestions here. Thanks to all

I save in excel format because every now and then I need to use it on a Windows machine.

Regardless of your operating system you should save in .ods format unless you have a need to share your documents (and even in that case there should be no need to to save as .xls(x) since MS Office claims to support ODF). The important thing is: The application’s native format and not any operating system.

May it be Wrap Text?

Please tell us clearly

I think that labels are better done in a table in Writer.

By the way, you can add a new line in a Calc cell pressing Ctrl+Enter.
