Calc sort not using changed menu

Sheet was sorted using menu with column headings by Column A, G (Winery, location). Saved. Windows restarted. Attempt to sort by G, D (location, year). No changes or error messages. Sorting with range and no labels works.

Add some column label to cell I1. The empty cell prevents detection of column labels.

Added label and tried sorting by Location (G). Still no change.

Thanks for the quick response. Didn’t work tho.

  1. Click any single cell in the column you want to sort.
  2. Click a quick sort button “A-Z” or “Z-A” on the main toolbar.

Let’s go step by step.

  1. Select cell A1 of Sheet1.
  2. Menu / Data / Sort.
As a result, the cell range A1:I77 should be selected.
The sorting dialog shows the keys: winery, Wine, Year.
    Right?

No. It shows whatever criteria I entered in menu. Just doesn’t sort by that criteria, only the first criteria I used. Earlier comment suggested using the A:Z sort which worked for the location column and reset the sort menu. Once I use the menu again, say sort on wine/year, using the menu will only sort on wine year regardless of what is entered.

Comment to Villeroy, his works for a single criteria and resets the data/sort menu. Next sort using menu becomes the only order for subsequent menu use.

I do thank you both for helping me.

This is the correct behavior.
Now in the “Sort Key 1” list change “winery” to “Location”, in the “Sort Key 2” change “Wine” to “Year”, in the “Sort Key 3” change “Year” to “-undefined-”.
After clicking OK, my sorting is correct (first by Location, then by Year).

This is the result after 1st sorting by winery, wine, year using the menu then trying sort by location, undef, undef. Hope you can read it. Must be some setting in my install of office (chose default).

No change in data order.

Please could you clarify: in the image I see “Sort Key 3” (Location) . What are “Sort Key 1” and “Sort Key 2” at this moment (scrolling up will be required)?

By the way, you can increase the size of the sorting dialog window in the usual way.

If the combination of winery, wine and year is unique, sorting by a fourth key does not change anything. A fourth key would sort between equal combinations of winery, wine and year.

Thanks. I’m embarassed I missed the menu was showing sort key 3. Changed it loacation in sort key 1 and it worked. Been messing with this for 2 weeks. Thanks again.

This would have let me catch my error. Thanks.

If you want to sort by winery, then wine, then year without the dialog:
Click year and a quick-sort button, then the wine and a quick-sort button and finally the winary and a quick-sort button. Calc does “stable sorting” which means the any previous sort order is preserved when you add another sort order.
