Calc spreadsheet. Unable to use Insert>Field>Sheet Name

Hi, I have been attempting to create a Calc spreadsheet for producing Gannt charts and have suddenly been unable to insert the sheet name within the spreadsheet using Insert>Field>Sheet Name menu option (was able to when I first started working on the spreadsheet). The option is greyed out as well as other menu options. Being new to Calc I expect that I have done something fundamentally wrong. I have the same issue even when a new Calc spreadsheet. I have also tried reinstalling the software which has made no difference. Some help this problem would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

The cell must be switched to editing mode (F2 by default) if a field shall be inserted.

Please clarify how I change to whole workbook to editing mode?

This isn’t about all the document or about all the sheet. What you actually can edit is a single cell. To start doing so you can
-1- go to the formula bar if shown (using the mouse)
-2- start editing the cell in situ (with F2)
-3- start to type somthing (with the same effect in addition).

As you likely wouldn’t enter text at all in your case, you may prefer -1- or -2-.

(There are no workbooks in Calc. That’s Excel-speak.)

Thank you that worked for me. What I don’t understand is that I was previously able to add the sheet name without knowingly selecting the edit mode.
Is the default setting for all cells in a new spreadsheet non editing mode?
Please clarify what you mean by “prefer -1- or -2-”?
Thanks again.

You neither told your version nor when you last upgraded.
The version I tested with was 7.0.4.2. And I cannot tell anything about older versions since I personally never used (as far as I can remember) the >Insert>Field path.

Probably the mentioned behaviour can be seen as a regression.

Addendum: Just tested with V 6.4.5. No difference. versions of the 5.y series didn’t even offer fields to insert.

I’m using version 6.4.7.2. and it worked for me by:

  1. Double clicking in cell
  2. Right clicking in cell which then gave the following options of fields to insert: Date, Time, Sheet Name, Document Title.

A doubleclick on the cell area should be another way of entering the cell’s edit mode. The context menu should then offer the mentioned item.
Unchanged.
What does actually happen now after your doubleclick?
There should be an insertion cursor at the beginning of the cell.

“What does actually happen now after your doubleclick?”
Yes a cursor appears then after right clicking a number of options are listed which includes Insert field.

Thank you for your assistance.

I have just realised that by double clicking a cell it takes you into cell edit mode. This is what I must have done previously with out realising it! Thank you to Lupp for helping me understand.
