Calc very slow to start up when connected to the Internet

Hello everyone,

This problem with LibreOffice taking forever to open the first document when Internet is available on the PC, no matter if it’s a Calc or Writer document or anything else, has been bugging me for at least a couple of years now. It seems to me that other people also have had similar problems. But finally I think I may have found a consistent solution.
This solution was, among other things, prompted to me by ideas about changing the default printer to something that is always present, like Microsoft’s Print to PDF. But even this solution didn’t do the trick for me all the time.
This got me looking for other possible solutions and I think I may have found a consistent workaround. At least it is working every time (for me), for every version of LibreOffice that I’ve tried. Presently I’m running version 7.5.0.1 (on my laptop) but I have also tested this on earlier versions of LibreOffice, and on other PCs, all of which are running 64-bit Windows 10.

So, here is my workaround:
In LibreOffice, go to:

  • Tools
  • Options
  • Load/Save
  • General
Then: Remove the tick from the “Load printer settings with the document” checkbox.

I’d really love to hear if others out there can confirm that this solution actually works!

I realise this is just a workaround for the real problem, which is slowness to open the first document after starting LibreOffice with Internet connected (when there is no Internet connection this problem is non-existent). So, in my opinion, the bug itself must reside elsewhere within LibreOffice…

Also had problems with LibreOffice files opening up in a minute
My solution:
I uninstalled the printer (HP Color LaserJet) and after that libreOffice started up in 2 seconds.
Then I installed the printer again.
Now LibreOffice works as usual again. (files open in 2 seconds)
