Calc: Why is there somtimes a hidden ' at the beginning of a cells contents

It seems to have something do with the SUM function, but it is not clearly stated in the help file?
Or maybe the corresponding help info is not easily searchable?

I’m assuming that is an apostrophe.

Usually, it will force the cell to be text.
